52 Challenge : January

January 2022: What I Read

I'm pretty stoked about having read 6 books this month. Last year I definitely went months without picking up a book and this year/challenge is off to a pretty good start.

The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams

This was DELIGHTFUL. The premise is a bunch of “alpha” males - athletes, business men, general big wigs around Nashville (and the typical hero in traditional romance novels) learn to not be a-holes by reading romance novels.

I was full on lol-ing in places. It’s a hilarious nod to the tropes. The scenes where the men talk about scenes in the regency novel they’re reading are absolute GOLD. I was sure this was going to be at least a 4 star-read, based on the first half of the book. But I felt the resolution came a little too easily and I was kind of bored towards the end. I am definitely glad I read it and plan on reading the rest of the series.

Game On by Janet Evanovich

This is book 11000 28 of her Stephanie Plum series. I had stopped reading around book 17, until I discovered the absolute genius of Lorelai King, the narrator. I’ve since gone back and listened to them beginning with when she started doing the narration (book 8). I’ve really enjoyed the last three books. Diesel shows up again in this one, there were some great characters, a terrifying villain and Lula getting some of Stephanie’s calamitous juju. You have to go into it accepting there will be some fat phobia (it’s far worse in the earlier books) and racist stereotypes but as a few hours of entertainment, I enjoyed it.

The Judge’s List by John Grisham

This is a sequel of sorts to the Whistler. It’s about a serial killer judge and it was definitely entertaining. I really enjoy John Grisham books and this is definitely a favorite among the novels he’s written in the last fifteen years. It wasn’t a mystery - you know early on who the killer is - but it’s definitely a thriller and an entertaining read.

We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

I don’t have much to say about this. It was a long-over due read and I’m glad I bought a copy. Good shit to remind myself.

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee

I wanted to like this more than I did. It just made me so ANGRY that I couldn’t enjoy the storytelling and the adventure as much as I wanted to. Every single slamming door in her face, every crappy white dude standing in in her way just infuriated me to the point that I was too caught up in it to enjoy the story. And it was such a good story. I love Mackenzi’s writing, her attention to detail and the research she’s devoted to writing this series.

The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks by Mackenzi Lee

I loved the heck out of this book. I finished it in a few, frantic hours. It was such a satisfying story and wrap up to the Montague Siblings story. Weirdly, I think it’s my favorite of all three, because you get to see Monty truly happy with Percy and the formation of a beautiful bond between Percy and Adrian. It was hard to read in places because it’s an incredible look into what it’s like to live with debilitating anxiety and I felt so much pain for him while also the empathy of having just the smallest fraction of my own anxiety in comparison. This one was definitely my favorite read of January.

It's been such a struggle for me to read lately, I am feeling book envy! :D Six books in a month is an amazing tally!! The Bromance Book Club sounds particularly fun. I love the little images you used, and the challenge seems like a super fun way to select books. Happy reading!!
